Medicare Advanced and Accelerated Payment Recoupment Extension

On October 1, President Trump signed into law the Continuing Appropriations Act, 2021 and Other Extensions Act which delays and alters the recoupment process for Medicare Accelerated and Advance Payments Program (MAAP) as follows:

  • Postpones the recoupment of disbursed funds until one year after the advance payment has been issued to a physician practice; the balance would be due by September 2022;
  • Reduces the per claim recoupment amount from 100% to 25% for the first 11 months and 50% of claims withheld for an additional six months.
  • The interest rate has been lowered to four percent, from 10.25 percent, if the balance after the recoupment process is not paid timely.
